The VITICULTURALAREAS_ALL feature class contains the most current information of the boundaries of the American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in California. The data was developed using the official TTB (Alcohol and tobacco Tax & Trade Bureau) approved boundary rulings. The TTB is the federal agency responsible for reviewing petitions for creation of new AVAs or modification of existing boundaries. The TTB publishes announcements when a petition is filed, and again when an official ruling is made. Final rulings are recorded in the Federal Register. More information about the TTB and the AVA approval process can be found at: http://www.ttb.gov. Additional information regarding AVA boundary information can be found on the Wine Institute's website at http://www.iwineinstitute.com.
When an AVA is established, a legal description of the boundary is included in the Federal Register. This description is used to digitize the AVA boundary. A list of approved maps used in describing the boundary is also included with the legal description. The approved maps are the United States Geological Survey 1:24,000 scale topographic maps. These maps are used as reference when digitizing the AVA boundary.

The AVA boundary data is available for purchase from VESTRA Resources, Inc, The rate for commercial, non-profit, and government organizations is $5,000 for an annual license. A. LICENSE 1. VESTRA retains ownership of the copies of the Files licensed hereunder. VESTRA hereby grants and Licensee hereby accepts the nonexclusive, nontransferable license to use the licensed number of copies of the Files. Licensee agrees to use reasonable effort to protect the Files from unauthorized use, reproduction, distribution, or publication. 2. Permitted Uses: a. Licensee may install Files onto permanent storage device(s). b. Licensee may make one (1) copy of the original Files for archival purposes unless the right to make additional copies is granted to Licensee in writing by VESTRA. 3. Prohibited Uses: a. Licensee shall not use Files to produce maps for resale or other distribution, without express written permission from VESTRA, which may be withheld in VESTRA’s sole discretion. b. Licensee shall not use Files for reproduction within other pieces or publications, such as books, brochures, magazines, newsletters, or other distributed hardcopy or digital media, without express written permission from VESTRA, which may be withheld in VESTRA’s sole discretion. c. Licensee shall not sell, resell, remarket, rent, lease, sublicense, lend, assign, time-share, transfer, or otherwise distribute Files, in whole or in part, or Licensee’s rights under this agreement to a third party. For purposes of this Agreement, “third parties” shall include any affiliates not specifically identified in the letter Agreement between VESTRA and licensee. d. Licensee shall not sell, resell, remarket, rent, lease, sublicense, lend, assign, time-share, transfer, or otherwise distribute Licensee’s rights under this agreement to a third party.
