<abstract>
Wildland Urban Intermix
This layer contains polygon features of urban intermix zones. This zone (WUI) is an area where human habitation is mixed with areas of flammable wildland vegetation. It extends out from the edge of developed private land into Federal, private, and State jurisdictions.
Abstract from CDF-FRAP wui03_1 grid layer:
These data describe relative risk to areas of significant population density from wildfire by intersecting residential housing unit density with proximate fire threat to give a relative measure of potential loss of structures and threats to public safety from wildfire. These data are consistent with general National Fire Plan ideals, but is more refined both in terms of mapping extent and in terms of quantification of risk. Within California, both wildfire risk and asset characteristics can vary in the same area. To account for these multiple combinations, spatial data is used to distinguish fire-related characteristics from assets, and spatial rules are applied for determining relative risk of loss (see the Assessment document Assessment Information Systems <http://www.frap.cdf.ca.gov/_assessment/Introductory_Materials/infosystems.html>).
</abstract>
<purpose>Wildland Urban Intermix
Used for National Forest planning and assessment and other natural resource applications.
Purpose from CDF-FRAP wui03_1 grid layer:
WUI Threat allows users to prioritize areas of risk to life and property from fire, and as such delineate areas and treatment strategies to lower that risk. It may serve as a fundamental land attribute for assigning regional and statewide policy for land use and fire management policy.</purpose>
<supplinf>Procedures_Used:
12/12/06 - CTrillo
WildlandUrbanIntermix05_1
From R5FrapWUI deleted the InOutForest attribute and changed the name of the WhosWUI to Source_Agency. The Source_Agency can be 1/ State, CDF 2/ Federal, FS 3/ CDF & FS. Cleaned up all slivers and renamed to WildlandUrbanIntermix05_1.
11/30/06 - CTrillo
From R5FrapWUI selected all polygons where InOutForest="Outside" and WhosWUI="R5". Deleted those polygons. Then selected all polygons where InOutForest="Outside" and WhosWUI="Both", recalculated the WhosWUI="FRAP". The layer now shows all WUI's designated by California Dept. of Forestry, FRAP outside and inside National Forest and WUI's designated by Forest Service, R5 just inside National Forest. Within the National Forest boundaries there are polygons that overlap where both CDF and FS have designated the same areas.
9/12/06 - CTrillo
R5FrapWUI
Unioned UrbanWildlandIntermixZones04_v2 & FrapWUI03GridToPolyNad83 & AdminForestBoundaries to create R5FrapWUI. Deleted all polygons where FrapWUI = 0 and R5WUI = 0, this deleted out all polygons that only contained AdminForestBoundaries data and no WUI data. Added column InOutForest and populated it with either "Inside" or "Outside". This is to track whether the WUI's are within National Forest or outside. Added column WhosWUI and populated it with "Frap", "R5", or "Both". This is to track whether the WUI boundary came from the wui03_1 Frap layer, UrbanWildlandIntermixZones04_v2 R5 layer, or the boundaries overlap from both layers.
9/12/2006 - CTrillo
FrapWUI03GridToPolyNad83
Downloaded wui.g.zip from The California Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protection, Fire and Resource Assessment Program web site http://frap.cdf.ca.gov/data/frapgisdata/select.asp. Converted the wui grid from raster to polygon feature class. Then reprojected the feature class from Nad27 to Nad83. Deleted all polygons where WUI was equal to 0. Renamed WUI to FrapWUI03GridToPolyNad83.
08/31/06 - CTrillo
UrbanWildlandIntermixZones04_2:
Copied the UrbanWildlandIntermixZones04_1 and SoCal_WUI_05_1 layers from SDE into a personal geodatabase. Deleted all of the Southern California data from the UrbanWildlandIntermixZones04_1 layer. Selected all data from SoCal_WUI_05_1 where WUI was equal to one. Copied WUI = 1 data from SoCal_WUI_05_1 to the UrbanWildlandIntermixZones04_1 layer. Edited the UrbanWildlandIntermixZones04_1 layer by deleting out any WUI = 0 donut holes, and by calculating all slivers within WUI = 1 areas to 1. Dissolved on WUI.
7/2004 - (tlindemann, GD)
UrbanWildlandIntermixZones04_1 - layer converted to feature class
SNVURBN04_1 - coverages provided by the individual forests were edge matched and appended together.
